Calcarole Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva 2017 is a distinguished single-vineyard Amarone crafted from the Calcarole hillside vineyard in Negrar, within the Valpolicella Classico zone of Veneto, Italy. This remarkable Riserva expression showcases the power, elegance, and complexity that make Amarone one of Italy’s most celebrated wines.
The vineyard sits on a steep, terraced hillside with ideal south-southwest exposure, allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly under the warm Venetian sun. The soils are limestone-rich with clay and sandy textures, contributing structure, minerality, and freshness to the finished wine.
Only carefully selected grapes are harvested by hand before undergoing the traditional Appassimento drying process, where the fruit is dried for approximately three months in dedicated drying rooms. This natural dehydration concentrates sugars, aromas, and flavour compounds, giving Amarone its signature richness and depth.
Following drying, the grapes are fermented slowly in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in oak. The wine is then matured for 12 months in 225-liter barriques, followed by 24 months in large oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while maintaining freshness.
In the glass, Calcarole 2017 reveals intense aromas of dark fruits with elegant freshness and purity. The palate is generous and layered, balancing depth and concentration with refined structure, delivering long, expressive flavours that evolve beautifully in the glass.
A sophisticated Amarone Riserva with excellent ageing potential.
