Comboio do Vesúvio Douro Red 2022 is a vibrant and expressive wine from the historic Quinta do Vesúvio, one of the most prestigious estates in Portugal’s Douro Valley. Produced by the renowned Symington family, this wine celebrates the deep connection between the estate and the Douro railway line, which has passed through the vineyard since 1887. The name “Comboio do Vesúvio”—meaning Vesúvio Train—pays tribute to this historic railway that has long been part of the estate’s daily life.

Unlike many Douro reds, this wine is completely unoaked, allowing the purity of the fruit and the distinctive character of the vineyard to shine through. The result is a beautifully balanced red wine that is approachable, vibrant, and full of fresh fruit expression.

The grapes come from selected parcels across the spectacular 137-hectare Quinta do Vesúvio vineyard, where vines grow on steep schistous slopes rising from the banks of the Douro River to elevations of 450 meters. These rugged conditions produce grapes with concentration and freshness, resulting in wines of remarkable balance.

The 2022 vintage was marked by extreme heat and drought across the Douro, with rainfall levels far below the long-term average. Despite these challenging conditions, cooler temperatures in September allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, delivering wines of impressive quality and aromatic precision.

The finished wine is bright and fruit-driven, showing layers of ripe red berries, fresh plum, and floral notes, supported by a smooth structure and refreshing finish.
