Perched high on the south-east facing slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, Le Haut De La Roche 2023 from Domaine Gilles Morat is a strikingly mineral expression of Pouilly-Fuissé. The one-hectare parcel, known as Sur La Roche, is rooted in shallow Jurassic limestone soils, a terroir that defines the wine’s precision and tension.
The vines, aged between 40 and 50 years, produce fruit of remarkable concentration and clarity. Hand-harvested grapes are pressed immediately before fermentation begins directly in French oak barrels (1–7 years old). The wine remains on its lees until late summer, with regular bâtonnage enhancing texture and depth. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked, blended, lightly filtered and bottled at the domaine.
The 2023 vintage reveals a beautiful golden hue. The nose is vibrant and mineral, layered with lemon zest and subtle stone nuances. On the palate, it is fleshy yet fresh, delivering power balanced by limestone-driven structure. The finish is long, refined and saline, reflecting the vineyard’s altitude and stony soils.
An expressive, terroir-focused Pouilly-Fuissé, equally suited to refined seafood dishes or enjoyed on its own as a sophisticated aperitif.
