Hazelburn 10 Year Old is the flagship single malt in the Hazelburn range, bottled at 46% ABV with a stated maturation of 100% bourbon.
The range takes its name from one of Campbeltown's lost distilleries and was first produced at Springbank Distillery in 1997. Where Springbank's own whisky is distilled 2.5 times and lightly peated, Hazelburn is triple distilled and unpeated, making use of all three stills. The distillery describes the resulting spirit as creamy, delicate and light, and that comes through in the glass.
The nose is sweet and tropical, with baked pineapple, lemon sherbet, honeycomb and dried orange peel. On the palate, sweet and savoury notes sit together: green apple with a slight vegetal quality, and a creaminess in notes of pastel de nata and custard creams. The finish is subtly earthy, with salted caramel, ginger, toasted coconut and a mineral note.
For customers who associate Springbank with peat and weight, Hazelburn offers a contrast in style, and it's a good one to explore alongside the other Springbank bottlings.
