Kayra Buzbağ Rezerv 2019 is a bold and characterful red wine from Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, crafted from two of the country’s most important indigenous grape varieties – Öküzgözü and Boğazkere. Produced by Kayra Winery, a pioneering producer dedicated to showcasing Turkey’s ancient viticultural heritage, this wine combines modern winemaking with traditional Anatolian grape varieties.
Anatolia is widely considered one of the birthplaces of wine, with a winemaking history stretching back thousands of years. Kayra has invested heavily in both vineyards and wineries to highlight the potential of Turkey’s native grapes. The Elazığ winery, established in 1942, specialises in red wines and produces Buzbağ Rezerv from carefully selected vineyard sites.
The grapes are fermented separately, allowing each variety to express its unique character before blending. A 48-hour cold maceration is followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks for around 10 days. The wine is then matured for 20 months in oak barrels, including 20% new oak (18% American and 2% French), adding structure and complexity to the final blend.
The result is a rich and concentrated wine that highlights the powerful character of Anatolia’s native grapes.
