Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum is a powerful and historic rum inspired by the legendary daily rum ration once issued to sailors of the British Royal Navy. Bottled at Admiralty strength (54.5% ABV), this expression follows the traditional blending style used by the Royal Navy until the rum ration was officially discontinued on 31 July 1970, a day famously remembered as Black Tot Day.
 
The name “Gunpowder Proof” originates from a naval tradition used to verify the strength of rum. Before hydrometers were invented, the ship’s purser known as the “Pusser” would mix a little rum with gunpowder and attempt to ignite it. If the mixture burned, the rum was considered “at proof," proving it had not been diluted.
 
This rum delivers the full-bodied intensity expected from a true naval-style rum. Deep notes of molasses, treacle, toffee, and honey are layered with warming spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, alongside hints of vanilla and oak. Despite its strength, the rum maintains a remarkably smooth and balanced character with a long, warming finish.
