Quinta do Vesúvio Douro Red 2020 is a powerful and elegant expression of the Douro Valley from one of the region’s most historic estates. Owned by the Symington family, Quinta do Vesúvio has long been regarded as one of the most prestigious vineyards in Portugal, producing wines of exceptional balance, intensity, and ageing potential.

The estate dates back to 1827, when the magnificent house, chapel and winery were constructed. Today the vineyard spans 137 hectares of dramatic terraced slopes rising from the Douro River at 110 meters to high-altitude parcels reaching 450 meters above sea level. The soils are predominantly schist with granite outcrops, ideal for producing concentrated yet elegant Douro wines.

A key component of this wine comes from the Quinta Nova vineyard, planted at high altitude with a westerly exposure. These vineyards were acquired by the legendary Dona Antónia Ferreira in the mid-19th century, and today they play an important role in producing wines with freshness, structure, and aromatic complexity.

The 2020 vintage was marked by warm temperatures and limited rainfall, resulting in smaller yields but excellent fruit quality. Careful vineyard management ensured healthy grapes, producing a wine with concentration, depth, and refined structure.

After fermentation, the wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (80% new oak), adding complexity, structure, and long ageing potential.

The result is a beautifully layered Douro red showing floral aromatics, forest spice, and rich dark fruit, supported by polished tannins and vibrant acidity.
