Schloss Johannisberg Großes Gewächs Trocken Riesling 2021 represents the pinnacle of dry Riesling from one of the most historically important estates in the world. Located in the Rheingau region of Germany, Schloss Johannisberg has been planted exclusively with Riesling since 1720, making it the world’s first Riesling estate.
The estate is legendary in wine history. It was here in 1775 that the concept of Spätlese (late harvest) was discovered, followed by the introduction of Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, shaping the classification of German wines forever. Today, Schloss Johannisberg remains a single vineyard designation and was recently awarded Best Vineyard in Europe 2025 in the World's Best Vineyards Awards.
The Großes Gewächs (GG) designation represents Germany’s highest classification for dry wines from top vineyards, equivalent to a Grand Cru-level wine. The estate’s south-facing vineyard rises from 114 to 181 meters above sea level, benefiting from sunlight reflected from the nearby Rhine River, while the Taunus forest protects the vines from cold northern winds.
The unique soils of Taunus quartz, loess, and loam store warmth and moisture, producing Rieslings with remarkable minerality and structure.
The grapes for the 2021 vintage were hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed before fermentation in traditional 1,200-liter oak barrels made from Schloss Johannisberg oak. After fermentation lasting six weeks, the wine rested on fine lees for seven months, adding complexity and texture.
The result is a powerful yet refined Grand Cru dry Riesling, showing depth, precision, and remarkable ageing potential.
