Schloss Johannisberg Riesling Spätlese Green Seal 2021 is a beautifully balanced late-harvest Riesling from the historic Schloss Johannisberg estate in Germany’s Rheingau region. Known as the birthplace of Spätlese, this legendary estate first discovered the late harvest style in 1775, forever shaping the history of German wine.
The Green Seal (Grünlack) represents the classic Spätlese style at Schloss Johannisberg wines made from late-harvested Riesling grapes that deliver greater intensity, natural sweetness, and aromatic complexity while retaining vibrant acidity.
The estate’s south-facing vineyard, rising from 114 to 181 meters above sea level, benefits from a unique microclimate created by the nearby Rhine River, which reflects sunlight and warmth back towards the vines. The soils of Taunus quartz, loam, and loess contribute to the wine’s elegant mineral backbone.
Grapes for the 2021 vintage were hand harvested later than the main harvest, allowing the fruit to develop higher sugar concentration and aromatic complexity. Fermentation took place slowly at cool temperatures using wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks, preserving the pure expression of Riesling. The wine was then aged for five months on its fine lees, enhancing texture and elegance.
The result is a fragrant, medium-sweet Riesling that perfectly balances sweetness with refreshing acidity.
