Crafted by the legendary Marc Kent and the team at Boekenhoutskloof, The Chocolate Block 2023 remains one of South Africa’s most admired and collectible red blends, a seamless harmony of Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Viognier.
The 2023 vintage faced a challenging growing season in Swartland, with below-average rainfall and minimal soil moisture. Yet, through skilled vineyard management and sustainable farming at Porseleinberg and Goldmine farms, this wine achieved remarkable concentration and elegance. Free from harsh heatwaves, the lower alcohol and natural freshness have given this vintage incredible balance and refinement.
Fermented naturally with whole berries in concrete and stainless steel, then aged 12–14 months in seasoned French oak, The Chocolate Block 2023 showcases purity of fruit, poise, and restrained power.
The bouquet is bold and aromatic; rich blackberries, blueberries, and bramble fruit intertwine with hints of black olive, white pepper, and spice. On the palate, dark fruit meets red liquorice, cherry, and exotic spice, enveloped by velvety tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long, dry, and hauntingly elegant, with classic Chocolate Block character with added finesse.
A wine that bridges intensity and superb elegance now, yet rewards with age.
